Happy Holidays!

21 Dec

I leave you this week with a monthly chart of the VIX. Notice how we broke out of the wedge and now have pullback to retest it. Once the new year resumes we will be looking for a bounce off this level which would induce selling in the broader market. If we can break lower on the VIX then the markets should continue higher.

Stay tuned for new things to come in 2012!

Swing Trading Watch List – Dec 20, 2011

19 Dec

Not much on the watch list for tomorrow. One thing to keep in mind (especially during slower times of the year) we are looking to maximize our returns on the trades we take, not necessarily increase our win rate, by taking more trades for smaller profits.

Proceed with caution…

Stocks to Watch on 12/20:

Longs: SO

Shorts: CRL, DV, SLH

S&P500 Bear Flag Inside a Larger Wedge

Looking Bearish, Watch for Fake Out

It looks to me like a little bear flag forming on the daily chart of the S&P500, however when you take a step back and look at the context of the large wedge that we have forming a small sell-off could be followed by a sharp rally.

Stocks to Watch on 12/19:

Longs: VSAT, DG

Shorts: GAS, LEA

Relative Strength and Relative Weakness

Now is great time to flush out your watch list and highlight the stocks that are holding up relative to the market. Any stock that is moving sideways or up in the past  few days would be coined “relative strength.” At the same token, make a note of the stocks that are down more than the broader market and look to short them on a bounce.

Entering on a new short on a bounce would occur once we break the low of the high bar after that bounce occurs, such as FSLR back on 12/8.

2 Trades Doing Okay… VPHM Long & FSLR Short

It’s not often we toot our own horn, but looking back to our 12/8 watchlist where we talked about VPHM and FSLR, along with a handful of other names, a number of which, never triggered entry signals. Nonetheless, it’s important to take every setup that meets your criteria and think in terms of probabilities, not letting one or two individual trades effect you. It’s a process that develops only with time and experience.

Stocks to Watch on 12/15:

Longs: FBHS, PETM, RNR

Shorts: Too late for NEW short positions, waiting for another bounce.

Swing Trading Watch List – Dec 8, 2011

7 Dec

All signs point in favor to the bulls. Draw your line in the sand and hang on. We’ll look to enter over the high of yesterday’s candle with a stop under the low. BUT remember, anything can happen. A bull rally along with a massive gap down tomorrow are two possible scenarios. We’ll be ready for either.

Stocks to Watch on 12/8:

Longs: AVA, BCE, CLB, DPZ, HUM, LKQX, MA, OZRK, PETM, PGN, PNW, SBUX, SWX, TGI, VPHM

Shorts: FSLR
